“Street Fighters” em Yu Yu Hakusho

Se você quiser ler esse texto em português, leia a página 1 deste post!

Yesterday evening I asked my brother to borrow me some CDs that he have with episodes of YuYu Hakusho, so I could watch them. I like this anime very much. The first time I watched all the episodes was when they were broadcasted in Rede Manchete, a Brazilian TV network, in the 1990s. After that, I watched them again when my brother bought a compilation of ten CDs with episodes recorded from the TV onto VHS, and then digitalized onto the RealMedia format, in 2004. I now begin to watch all the episodes again, with the same or maybe a greater appreciation than I had when I watched them before.

I have watched twelve episodes, and in one of them, a curious detail was brought to my attention. It is about this I will write here, and despite having seen it before, only now I noticed this detail (at least it is what I remember).

In the nineth episode, called O Sucessor in Brazil (originally 幻海の継承者トーナメント開始, that means “The tournament of the successor of Genkai begins”), there is the appearance of characters that look very much alike (if it is not themselves) some fighters from the games Street Fighter and Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.

After a quick research in web search engines, I soon saw that I was not the only one to notice this detail. On the Wikia website of YuYu Hakusho there is a section with the name “References”, where the first of them is this appearance of the fighters in the anime. There are many forums where this issue is discussed, but the funniest thing to see is some comments about the fact grossly distorted. Some of these comments, for example, cite the appearance of characters who did not appear in the scenes. One of the comments I saw cited the appearance of a character in the manga, and checking myself the testimony, I saw that it was a lie. So, I noticed that people like to brag about their “knowledge”, even when they are completely unaware of the matter.

Well, without further ado, let’s verify the pictures.

Ryu and Retsu
In my opinion, Togashi did not want to do some reference here, but the monk at the right looks like Retsu, from Street Fighter (although almost all Buddhist/Shintoist monks dresses this way).

Yusuke and Kuwabara, with Zangief in the background
This was undoubtedly a reference to Street Fighter II. It can be clearly seen that the man in the center reminds Zangief, with a hairless chest, and a big scar on it.

Yusuke with Dhalsim in the background
Another reference to Street Fighter II. In the right side of the picture we can see a man that looks like Dhalsim.

Yusuke, Kuwabara and E. Honda(?)
Here, at the left side of the picture, a sumo wrestler appears, and people say he seems to be E. Honda, but honestly could be any fighter. There is not a clear reference here.

Chun-Li(?)
Here, in the center of the picture, there is a person dressed in blue with two hair buns on her head, which resemble the character Chun-Li.

Ryu and Guile(?)
And lastly, at the left of the picture, it is possible to see a character with a kimono similar to the one Ryu wears. People also say there beside him there is a man with a peculiar hairstyle that looks like Guile.

And that is it. The Wikia text that I quoted also says that there are also Ken, that I sincerely did not see, and T. Hawk, that if it is the person I’m thinking, I did not show him here because he does not look like T. Hawk.

Excuse me, now I will continue to watch the anime. See you again.
